Common Health Problems With Bulldogs Anal Glands : -These can become blocked, the bulldog will sit & move around in circles on its bottom to relieve irritation. The glands are on located on both sides of the anus, and can become full, but a quick simple procedure to empty the glands can be done by either yourself or a vet. (Using a cotton bud, gently insert into the anus & move in strokes to either side to clean & remove the excess faeces)
Diarrhoea Overfeeding or a change in diet both can cause an upset stomach, especially in puppies. In this case, stop all food for 24 hours & restart their diet with small amounts of plain boiled rice with either chicken or fish. Ensure that fresh water is available at all times.
External Parasites - Fleas
The bulldog is a short coated breed, so it is easy to see if your bulldog has fleas. One of the common signs is continual scratching, and upon close inspection you are able to see flea droppings. Fleas are usually found around warm areas of the bulldog I.e tail, head and/or neck. Using a insecticidal shampoo, wash your bulldog, towel dry, and allow your bulldog to dry off completely in warm weather. Keep in mind that bulldogs are very sensitive to heat & should never be exposed to a high centigrade of sun for prolonged periods. (See Heatstroke) External Parasites - Ticks
Much less common than fleas, and are normally picked up from the grass in a field where sheep have been. Care must be taken in removing the ticks, the head of the tick must not be left in the bulldog, as it could set up an infection. Soaking a swab in surgical spirit or ether & apply to the tick/s, this will then loosen the tick/s from the skin, of which can then be removed fully intact
Para-Influenza (Kennel Cough) This is highly contagious and can be carried home by unsuspecting exhibitors. Most common to be found in large kennels I.e dogs homes etc. Your dog may cough as if he/she has something stuck in their throat, some dogs vomit white froth, and some dogs just retch. It is very important to inoculate puppies as soon as they are old enough and should continue to maintain these boosters on a yearly basis.. It is not usually life threatening to healthy dogs & once they’ve been infected once, they usually gain immunity, If your bulldog has kennel cough, you should not allow him/her to mix with other dogs for a few weeks, also consult your vet for advice.
Cherry Eye
Occasionally occurs in young puppies, usually around 10-16 weeks, but can also occur later on. Cherry eye is a small pink/red lump that appears in the inner corner of the bulldogs eye, and may look uncomfortable but isn’t. It does require a minor operation to remove the gland, some vets use a local anaesthetic to do this procedure, and the bulldog recovers fully within hours.
Entropion
This is a condition that occurs when the eyelids turn in towards the eye and the eyelashes irritate the eye area, this then causing great discomfort. It also produces a continuous discharge from the eye, the only way to correct this condition is by having surgery. Eye drops & cream may help sooth the eye temporarily, but will not cure the condition at all.
Feet
Cysts on bulldogs can potentially be a problem. A lesion appears in between the toes & can make it painful for the dog/bitch to walk. However if your bulldog is constantly licking his/her feet, examine their pads, as he/she may only have a small wound that needs treating. Heatstroke
Bulldogs must be carefully managed in very hot weather. They will often lie in the sun with no ill effects, but they should be left quietly on their own with plenty of shade to move to if needed. Never walk your bulldog in high heat, or allow children to run & chase them around the garden.Always (during the summer season) exercise your bulldog either early morning and/or late evening. Eczema
This is most common in the bulldog breed and it is not contagious. It can erupt quickly & spread from a small spot into a large patch within hours. Cause…. 1. Scratching 2. Stress 3. Excessively rich diet 4. Hot weather Solution:- Tea tree oil or Aloe Vera spray as soon as the symptoms appear.
